Dormobiles Around The World

While Dormobiles were most popular in the UK, which is the reason that the owners club is based over here, they do have a worldwide following.
Even though the Folkstone factory of Martin Walter Ltd would convert any vehicle to order and to the owner’s particular specifications they also sold conversion kits which could convert any car without having to go into the factory.

These conversion kits were sold to companies who could then carry out the work and they were quite popular in the USA. The kits were also shipped directly by Martin Walter Ltd to dealers who would then carry out the modification.
For example, Land Rover Dormobiles were available directly through North American Land Rover dealers. And there was at least one company in California that installed Martin Walter Ltd Dormobile pop up roofs onto Dodge window vans and during the late 1960s and early 70s.

The main sales area for Dormobiles was definitely the UK and only Land Rover and Volkswagan Dormobiles were sold in the USA but a few other Dormobiles car makes have been privately imported over there.
Although for some Dormobile purists the only true Dormobile is one that was converted in Folkstone by Martin Walter Ltd so some won’t consider the North American models as a true Dormobile.
Now days the Dormobile owner’s club is based in the UK but does have members from around the world proving that while the UK is the main base for the vehicle their popularity did spread.
